A message from the CEO
Community Environmental Center (CEC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides environmental services to residents in the New York metropolitan area. We address environmental problems which undermine the health and well being of people, the affordability and sustainability of housing, and the development of local economies in the City. We find solutions to these problems through linking energy and environmental issues to community development. CEC's mission is to assist people throughout New York City in achieving a healthier, more affordable life through improvements to their home and community environments and by providing educational and technical assistance services through the CEC Learning Center.

CEC Activities

CEC's activities fall within two major program areas:

In the Environmental Services Program, we provide building retrofit services which lower operating costs while reducing pollution and health hazards. We work on apartment buildings as well as 1 to 2 family homes. Our services include energy audits, insulation, heating system work, and several important health and safety measures.      CEC's government-supported Low-Income Program provides energy conservation and some health and safety services to over 1,600 low-income homes and families each year. In addition, CEC provides over 100 families with emergency heat assistance each winter. Information on its page includes income eligibility requirements and the application process.

We are especially proud of our Community Education and Assistance Program. Using general support from foundation, corporate and in-kind donors, we designed and are developing the CEC Learning Center for youth and community groups. The Center is designed as an "environmental neighborhood," and features an interactive, model Eco-House where people can see behind walls, under floors and into heating systems. Here, visitors can learn how buildings and their components work and how to conserve natural resources. We plan to conduct workshops and trainings for community organizations and a variety of learning activities for young people. The "neighborhood" is also home to an Eco-store that will market conservation and environmentally friendly products for the home. CEC Staff

Community Environmental Center's racially and ethnically diverse staff of over 30 men and women is uniquely capable. Senior management has over 25 years experience in the design and management of programs concerning the environment, community development, housing, employment training and job creation.

I hope you enjoy your visit with CEC. Please feel free to send us comments about this page or requests for further information on any of our services.

Sincerely,

Richard M. Cherry, President and CEO
