Hawkwind 25th Anniversary

Hawkwind Links 4/95 - 7/95

1998/12/7 - The original April 95 version of this page was one of my first ever html efforts, I dazzled myself and others by turning up dozens of Hawkwind links... many of which are still here, and a few of which may even still work.. (I did do a clean up in Jan 96)
My current Hawkwind links page can be found here

1995/7/4 Hawkwind plan to do a few major European shows over the summer and then may return to the US in the fall for a tour based in Cleveland, where some guy is building them a bus.

Nik Turner is touring US right around now.
According to bitnet: Simon House will open the show *and* will also be a member of Nikwind. Allan Powell will be on the entire tour. No more pillowcase--lasers this time around. Pressurehed guys--Len Del Rio and Tommy Grenas. Creed will do assorted dates (probably West Coast) Del will do the entire tour. No DikMik. Keyboard player from an 80's band called FALCO,
7/14 Will be able to confirm all this when they come to Limelight NYC 4/16, but a bit confused by a listing for a Knitting Factory show the same day for a 'Nic Turner".
7/19 Well, only spoke with Nik briefly, so did not learn much except that he is ignorant of 'net runnings including the ICU page. Del came and hung out on the pin-stand for an extended period though, and said he expects to get up on the net soon. His interest is playing the game of Go, in which he is expert, online.
As for the show, I arrived late as usual from making some last minute pins, and Simon House was just finishing, but sounded thoroughly ethereal. Then a band called Sixteen Deluxe played. Girl led, from Austin, they started off grungy, and then went off into some extended noise a la B. Surfers, and were only moderately appreciated by the crowd, in which even Hawkfans were outnumbered by the general regular Sunday night Limelight meat-market. During the next interval one girl came by the stand wearing a very good-looking Hawknet T-shirt. Nik came on, resplendent in white bodysuit, black jockstrap, and yellow choker. The band sounded punchier than last year, no doubt due to Powell's poundage, but I thought the guitar was def more driving. The quieter existential passages were somewhat marred by the throbbing sound of Shabba Ranks coming from the next room. Del still plays the same VCS3 he had in '71 by the looks, and uses a real (wood and metal) axe with one string and a pick-up as his instrument. They easily won an encore.
By the time I packed up their merch. was gone but Nik was able to procure a copy of the new double live CD for $20.

7/25 Received the improved NIK TURNER SPACE RITUAL 95 TOUR DATES

and also a mailing from Griffin of their August 1995 release schedule.

I recall the record came about very much as a collaboration between Calvert and Paul Rudolph who were sharing Nik Turner's girlfriend's flat at the time. Starfighters were dropping like flies, causing considerable U.S./German friction and Calvert delighted in rubbing salt in the wound. He was also proud of the original embossed cover
I visited a session and have a distinct memory of a drummer sitting upon the stool and saying "Wow! - I haven't played these in a long time!" - I fled.
