What Was Up
- Sunday 4/30
- On a day that Shimon Peres, at Madison Sq Garden, declared a "Day Of Tears" it rained non-stop in NYC, which meant a good day to lie in bed and catch up on the papers...
- The Village Voice could not resist this headline to kick off the Yankee season. The Voice writers consider that, in the ultimate irony, Dave Winfield may
,by forcing him to keep his nose out long enough
for the team to develop,
have given King G. another World Series ring. We hope.
And also thank Jack McDowell for his kind gift of a "free year" (cost $3.3m).
- Saturday's Times had plenty to chew on. Jon Parele's review of the Mike Watt show, for example. Better than being there, practically. Gratifying to see the bum fron San Pedro reach Emperor's New Clothes status. Those wondering what happened to edfromohio check Red Star Belgrade.
- A 'gossip' piece about a modest pin-customer of ours.
- and, on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau, a timely admission from an Argentine bishop.
- Still trying to ascertain the point-spread on U.S. D.o.J.vs Microsoft.
- Read with relish about Mayor Mockus, an anarchist now running Bogota, who appears to live up to his name.
- The rain spattering on my pillow through the open window put me in the mood for some
whitewater, so I took off down the Grand Canyon.
- And, somehow, reaching Texas, uncovered Microsoft's plan to put their ultimate testicular grab on not only the computer, and
the online but the music industry, too. The point spread widens...
and due credit to Ronald Reagan, whose ignorance/libertarian outlook at the vital time allowed this monster to
spawn.
Otherwise we'd all be, like the State Dept, stuck in Wang. or even worse, the 'engineered'
environment of Apple.
Heard an O/S2 honcho on CBS radio say that MS should be compelled to include all (4) other OS in their
Win95 roll-out... Do me a favor.
I read at Xmas that the MS 'set-top' box and the Sony 'game' machine will, before the year is out,
render present consumer reality entirely to shreds, anyway.
Meanwhile, best grab one of those Developer Bundles
as soon as.
- Saturday 4/29
- Vern sold out of the new Siouxsie pin at the show, thanks to our new display. Well, the fact t-shirts were $27 probably helped. Kids were madly grabbing the after-show invite, but he got one, so I will be able to upgrade the pin. That 'strangle' pose reminds me of Reggie Miller vs Spike Lee - a sore point with V. on a day the Knicks lost.
- To cheer him up I made a cute display and he headed off to Coney Island High for the Madball show. Heavy Duty of Falafel Mafia got him in. Rejuvenate were surprised to see we had their pin. I wonder if they know that Nike used their logo in an ad campaign. V. snagged a poster so I'll be able to upgrade that old naff Madball pin too.
- Checked latest MediaEater
and paging back to 1.26 found
our link. Thanks Mark.
- On that same page was a link to Internet Notes guide to NYC scene. These guys are going to save us a whole bunch of wwwork! Nice going.
- Further MediaEating revealed an Operation Ivy page.
- Friday 4/28
- Joly, in fact, sick as a dog, still managed to get up a pin for the Siouxsie show.
- and download the Internet Phone.
- But missed the Bjork on the NJ's 106.3.
What a monster! Wicked wicked production.
106.3 seemed to counterpont it about half-an-hour later with the Portishead. Kinda yang to yin.
Both records really stand out from the regular grungy harmony gear. - Wednesday 4/26
- Mute Records have been living up to their name as regards their WWW site, but we found 'em. Their host (cityscape) boasts of being the busiest
servers in Europe, and we believe it. Slow...
- Also Bomp Records have a cool Iggy page.
- Tuesday 4/25
- Welcoming long time SoCal sysop Mike Zed to the web.
- Here's a coupla music links for ya Mike.
- Vernon disgusted at pins take from first Dinosaur Jr show's all adult audience, still he did make level 4 on Descent today.
- Got Bad Brains promo CD. Look for more audio, soon!

- Sunday 4/23
- Checked the Happy Bob Marley's 50th Birthday page.
- Saturday 4/22

aiff audio with no success. Still have not actually heard the record.

- Checked
- new layout and pieces on Ween and No FX.
(Note that Beat Mag stories only stay up for a week.)
- Received Spring 95 Bad Taste
catalog from Iceland. They've gone a little cyber-happy.
- And, of course, Thursday is New York Post Interactive day. Lisa's Music On The Web still managing without tildes. The Post headline writers have settled on 'Net as the
definitive term. The lead story pits Nicholas Negroponte's optimistic "nothing
short of awesome" view, against Cliff Stoll's that the 'Net is a "giant ostrich hole." Another story describes the forthcoming World Chat service.
- Joly thinks: Get a domain, boy! - but still uncertain whether we are pins@whatsup or whatsup@pins or what@what. Sigh.
- Watched UFC V (ultimate fighting) on someone's filched PPV. Talk about wack! It's kinda like the ultimate rough sex minus the sex.
- Wednesday 4/19
- Getting keen, after viewing all the
trailers for the Tank Girl movie,
we find that, strangely, it has totally disappeared from NYC screens.
- Updated the shows list, and also added
- Bad Brains Dates
- Tuesday 4/18-
- So, let's go surfing.. a couple of new labels on the net. Which site do you prefer?
- US Major Atlantic Records..
- Irish techno Indie Red Records
- Monday 4/17
- Heard from Lisa Robinson that, indeed, she put it in, but that the Post typesetters can't do tildes.
- Saturday 4/15
- Added front and inside cover art to the Bad Brains page.
- Friday 4/14
- Was it Good for you, too?
- Thursday 4/13
- Eagerly opened the New York Post Interactive to Lisa Robinson's Music On The Web column, and,
spotting the headline thought our shows page was surely in for a plug, but not this week...Again
a good effort from Lisa. NYPI also included a feature on NY Online,Sonicnet & The Transom, and a story on CD-ROM publisher a Voyager's new site.
- Another successful test of the new stand at the Luscious Jackson show.
- LJ guitarist Gabby once
slaved in the Better Badges sweatshop, so it is to be taken for granted that this is one of the coolest bands around.
- After the show, reread Deborah Frost's perceptive review of Natural Ingredients.
- Also read the The Cult show too.
And I have a history with
them. Just wasn't meant to happen.
- Further received info that the whatsup.com domain, which I had dallied on registering, had been grabbed
by Strickland & Assoc.
- Still, upgraded Duffy to 8 Meg.
- Duff , a TV
maven, not that impressed by the metaverse
TV Tonite page.
- Tuesday 4/11
- Wwwacky discussion on echonyc - j web sh 38.
- in fact, so wwwacked that I fell asleep and missed the Morphine show.
- Monday 4/10
- Downloaded Netcruiser 1.6 upgrade - more features - more bugs! Includes winsock.dll, however, unsuccessful test with
the real-audio player
- Sunday 4/9
- went and hung with Hawkwind at the Limelight. They are on a 25th
anniversary tour. Believe it or not, I knew them then, in 1970,
when the whole band was living in a truck parked outside Finch's on the Portobello Rd.
- Checked the MediaEater site - now looking pretty impressive. A new feature is
a page that is just newspapers.
- Saturday 4/8-
- Comprehensive re-design of the pin stand to menu-based system
test at Belly show was judged successful,
tho pin retrieval has to be accelerated.

new record.
- Monday 4/3-
- Having some luck downloading the OJ Murder Animation.
- Friday 3/31-
- I trust you are all staying cyberhip thru perusal of the New York Post Interactive section.
- Put up a Bad Brains page.
Joly
